Humble Beginnings
Carolina Stakes & Wood Products started out as Wendell's Woodwork when Wendell Long was thirteen years old.
In 1972, when we had come out of the public school system and started homeschooling, Wendell needed something to do in the afternoons after he finished his school in the morning.
Turning scrap into a valuable product
His dad, Herbert Long, was working at Morgan Lumber company in Marshville, North Carolina when he had the idea to make wooden stakes from the scrap lumber he had that would not work for framing houses.
They called the scrap lumber “cull lumber” and he started bringing home that cull lumber for Wendell to make into stakes.
They set up a production system behind their house with a rip saw, conveyors and pointing machines and began manufacturing surveyor stakes, tree stakes, tomato stakes and silt fence stakes, to name a few.
In 1976, Wendell's Woodwork became a corporation and Herbert came home to work with Wendell in the stake business.
